Work-study & employment

Financing UC through part-time work

There are a couple of ways to approach having a job while pursuing your UC education:

Federal work-study

Some financial aid packages may include federal work-study funds. Work-study programs can appeal both to employers — who receive partial payment from the government for hiring students — and to students who may find it easier to secure jobs. Work-study is limited to part time during the school year, and students usually work no more than 20 hours a week during the school year.

Part-time employment

Regardless of whether or not you qualify for work-study, chances are you can find a part-time job either on or off campus, likely earning between $8 and $12 an hour. In addition, students are expected put earnings from full-time summer jobs toward their education costs.
