UC joins national climate change teach-in
As a global leader in sustainable solutions, the University of California joined hundreds of universities that took part in Focus the Nation.
The national teach-in, held Jan. 30 and 31, aimed to engage students, faculty and community members in combating global warming.
UC tackles climate change both through its cutting-edge research and sustainability practices. That two-pronged approached was reflected in Focus the Nation events. All UC campuses held workshops, provided demonstrations of clean energy solutions and conducted discussions on sustainability efforts. UC chancellors, state legislators and environmental experts hosted talks and participated in events across the campuses.
UC President Robert C. Dynes spoke at UC Davis about UC's work in providing solutions to climate change challenges.
"The University of California embraces this opportunity to raise awareness about the urgent need for climate solutions," Dynes said. "UC has had a long history of leadership in the environmental sciences, and at the urging of our students, we have been practicing what we teach through institutional sustainability practices."
Campus highlights included an address by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, a green business fair and a booth set up for students, faculty and others to send a video message to the U.S. Congress on climate change.
From green energy to energy efficiency, UC has been a leader in its sustainability practices and environmental research programs. In October, the Sierra Club's magazine named UC one of America's Top 10 "coolest" schools for its efforts to stop global warming.
