Record number of students apply to UC
Undergraduate applications to the University of California's fall 2008 term totaled a record 121,005, up 9 percent from last year.
All campuses saw an increase in both freshmen and transfer applicants, according to preliminary figures. UC Merced showed the highest yearly percentage gain for combined freshman and transfer-student applications (15.4 percent) followed by UC Davis (15), UC Santa Barbara (14.7), UC Santa Cruz (13.4), UC Berkeley (10.2), UCLA (9.8), UC Irvine (7), UC Riverside (6.7) and UC San Diego (6.1).
Among would-be freshmen, applications from every underrepresented racial and ethnic group grew: Chicano/Latino applicants by 17.9 percent and African Americans by 16.1 percent. Since 2006, Chicano/Latino applications rose 30.4 percent while African-American applications rose 26.4 percent.
California freshman applications increased 7.7 percent, while those from out-of-state applicants increased 14.4 percent and international applicants 25.2 percent.
California transfer applications increased by 7.1 percent, reversing last year’s drop, while out-of-state and international applicants were up 5.1 percent and 24.9 percent, respectively.
Of all the applications received, all but 721 were filed online.
