UC students get out the vote
UC Santa Barbara students won the national Ultimate College Bowl contest by registering the highest number of students to vote in the November election. UCSB students took first place in both number of registrations – 10,265 – and percentage of students registered – 48.6 percent.
The top five universities in number of voters registered were all UC campuses: UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley (9,822), UCLA (8,587), UC San Diego (3,746) and UC Santa Cruz (3,689).
MySpace, the popular social networking Web site, sponsored the contest with Rock the Vote, MTV, Declare Yourself and other get-out-the-vote groups. The first prize for most registered voters is a free Death Cab for Cutie concert. First prize for highest percentage of voters is a Colin Meloy concert.
