UC Davis researchers found that the winter chill needed for California's fruit and nut crops to thrive is decreasing due to climate warming. In parts of the Central Valley, the chill has declined 30 percent and is worsening. California is home to nearly 3 million acres of fruit and nut trees. Researchers fear that continued global warming could make the state unsuitable for growing many of those varieties.
