UC garners sustainability awards
The California Sustainability Alliance has named the University of California one of three recipients of its Excellence in Sustainability Showcase Awards.
The 10 campuses are being recognized for their clean energy, green building, sustainable transportation, environmental purchasing and waste reduction efforts. UC will be honored on Feb. 10 in Sacramento. The sustainability alliance is a California Public Utilities Commission program funded by utility customers.
In addition, UC Irvine's energy and water efficiency programs garnered one of five top Flex Your Power awards in the annual statewide competition. The campus saves 4 million gallons of water a year and reduced its peak electricity demand by 68 percent.
UC Irvine was also the winner of the 2008 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for its sustainable transportation program.
The program saves $21 million a year in fuel, vehicle and construction costs in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and congestion.
