Going green saves UC $12 million
Energy efficiency projects at UC campuses are delivering an estimated $12 million in annual utility cost savings.
Retrofit projects slated for completion by 2011 are expected to further reduce systemwide power consumption by 10 percent, resulting in more cost savings.
UC's annual sustainability report documented the strides the university is making to reach the green goals established in its 5-year-old sustainable practices policy.
In 2008 all campuses cut the amount of garbage sent to landfills. With a goal of diverting at least 50 percent of waste, seven UC campuses have exceeded that mark with UCLA showing a 174 percent increase in the amount of waste diverted.
