At the UC Leadership Institute held in October at Irvine, Regent Eddie Island noted the growing minority population in California and urged some 300 UC managers to be leaders in promoting the values of diversity and inclusion. Below, you may view and hear highlights of Island's keynote address, "Leading Change in a Multi-Ethnic and Multi-Cultural Environment.
California is one of five "majority-minority" states, which has enormous implications, including for UC. "We must make healthy, educate, gainfully employ, and welcome those who are here." "We've got to open up our state's institutions to embrace and welcome this new majority . . . . UC has work to do relative to achieving diversity." Critical engine to change. "We need you to lead UC and state in this struggle for the values of diversity and inclusion." "We've got to find a way to redouble our efforts to live diversity in our decisions we make every day."
