Dear Members of the UC Community,

It is a great honor and a solemn responsibility to be assuming the presidency of the best university in the world. I look forward to working with all of you as we face the great challenges that lie ahead for the University. Together, we can sustain and extend UC’s historic commitment of service to the people of California.

The University of California is a powerful foundation of this great state: from the world-class research that drives our economy and improves the quality of our lives, to our contributions in educating some of the brightest students in the country, to our public programs that provide valuable services to communities across the state. Because of the University’s critical role in shaping California’s diverse economy and society, it is clear that our roles – as students, alumni, staff and faculty – are crucial not only to the future of the University, but to the future of all Californians.

In the coming months, I will be making visits around the state to meet in person with as many of you as possible (future events). However, during my first few days in office, I want to take advantage of technology to listen to your concerns, answer your questions and share your ideas about the University’s future through a series of live web chats.
