Departmental Requirements — UC Santa Barbara
College of Creative Studies
Applicants to emphases in the College of Creative Studies (CCS) must submit a supplemental application and comply with other special application procedures, as described below. In December, the College sends all fall-quarter applicants who selected a CCS emphasis on the UC application a brochure that includes the supplemental application form and information about application procedures. The CCS application form and other application materials must be submitted directly to CCS by mid-January.
Applicants for the winter and spring quarters must contact the College directly to obtain the application, or see the CCS website.
Applicants who are not admitted to the College of Creative Studies are considered for admission to the College of Letters and Science. CCS applicants must provide the following:
- The completed supplemental form included in the brochure on which the applicant has specified one of the eight CCS disciplines;
- A personal letter of intent address to the Provost of CCS in which the applicant states his or her academic interests, reasons for wanting to study in CCS and qualifications;
- High school and any college transcripts (required in additions to any transcripts that are requested by UCSB’s Admissions Office);
- Work submitted in evidence of talent as follows: for art majors, slides or photographs of artwork; for literature majors, writing samples (a critical essay and creative writing); for music majors, written scores and recordings of musical compositions; for mathematics and science majors, examples of independent research or other evidence of an exceptional capacity for intellectual discovery;
- Letters of recommendation from persons well acquainted with the student’s academic background — at least two for Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics and Music majors. Letters are helpful, but not essential, for Art and Literature majors.

College of Letters and Science

Consult the appropriate department for details.
Dance
Admission to the major and to the dance technique series is contingent upon results of a placement audition in February of the year preceding intended enrollment. Auditions are offered during registration week of the fall quarter for applicants who were admitted to UCSB but were unable to audition for the major. Students should be advised to attend to earlier audition to reserve space in the program.
