Departmental Requirements — UC San Francisco

UCSF is devoted solely to study of the health sciences. UCSF programs have special application forms. Applicants do not apply using the University’s undergraduate application form.

Dentistry

Preparation for the dentistry program requires only three years of undergraduate study; however, prospective applicants should be advised that completing a bachelor’s degree program is strongly recommended. Applicants should request applications from the American Association of Dental Schools Application Service and return them no later than January 1 of the year of intended enrollment. Applicants must take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) no later than November 3 of the year before intended enrollment.

Medicine

Preparation for the M.D. program requires a minimum of three years of undergraduate study; however, prospective applicants should be advised that completing a bachelor’s degree program is strongly recommended. Students considering a career in medicine should consult the appropriate pre-professional advisor at their college or university. Most applicants begin the application process during the summer before the senior year for entry the following fall.

Applicants should request applications from the American Medical College Application Service. Applications are due by November 1 of the year before intended enrollment. Applicants must take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) at least one year, but no more than two years, before they plan to enroll.

Nursing

The School of Nursing offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. The B.S. in Nursing, with articulation into the M.S. program, is designed for registered nurses who want to enhance their career opportunities through further undergraduate and graduate study.

Pharmacy

Applicants must be eligible for admission to the University, and must have completed at least two years of work in pre-professional courses. Applications are accepted July 1–November 1 of the year before the student plans to enroll.
