- If a sophomore takes a UC-certified AP course and successfully completes it, but does not take the related AP exam, will he or she still receive the additional honors/AP credit?
- Several students at our high school are taking courses at both a community college and a CSU. How many semester courses may a student take at the college level? Is it appropriate for us to weight grades for these classes on a 5.0 scale when calculating a student's academic GPA?
- Can a high school student earn AP credit for a class taken freshman year? (The student earned a 4 on the AP test.)
- How would a senior's evaluation be affected if she drops an AP course during the second semester?
- I am working with a student who has AP scores of 3 for English Language and 4 for English Literature. How much credit will he receive?
- Why are some courses listed as honors on my school's approved list but not on the pop-up course list in the online application?
- Has UC stopped weighting grades for honors-level high school courses and does it now give extra points only for AP courses? Does the University still grant college credit based on AP exam scores?
- Does UC grant extra grade points for a grade lower than C in an honors course?
If a sophomore takes a UC-certified AP course and successfully completes it, but does not take the related AP exam, will he or she still receive the additional honors/AP credit?
Yes. Not taking the exam only means that the student will not get college credit in addition to high school honors credit. Completing the course still earns the extra honors point.

Several students at our high school are taking courses at both a community college and a CSU. How many semester courses may a student take at the college level? Is it appropriate for us to weight grades for these classes on a 5.0 scale when calculating a student's academic GPA?
High school students may take as many college courses as they wish (and as their high schools allow). When determining a student's eligibility, the University limits the number of these courses to eight semesters. This total includes college-level courses in the "a-g" college-preparatory subjects that are transferable to the University.
In addition to the preliminary GPA used for establishing UC eligibility, campuses may look at an applicant’s academic record in a variety of ways during the selection process. These GPA variations may include a fully weighted GPA that includes all honors grade points earned in grades 10 and 11 (this is the GPA used to rank students at each high school for purposes of identifying ELC students) and an unweighted GPA in which no honors grade points are included.

Can a high school student earn AP credit for a class taken freshman year? (The student earned a 4 on the AP test.)
Since courses taken in the freshman year do not count toward the student's UC GPA, the student would not get the extra grade point usually awarded for AP and other honors courses. However, since the student passed the AP exam, he or she would receive University credit for the AP test score.
More information on AP tests is available here.

How would a senior's evaluation be affected if she drops an AP course during the second semester?
UC campuses do look at how many honors courses students are taking during senior year and expect a strong academic schedule during that year. Dropping a course could affect her admission. If planned coursework will change from what was described on the application, the student should let the campus admissions office know as soon as possible.

I am working with a student who has AP scores of 3 for English Language and 4 for English Literature. How much credit will he receive?
The student will receive a maximum of 8 units.

Why are some courses listed as honors on my school’s approved list but not on the pop-up course list in the online application?
In some cases, a school categorizes a course as honors that is not accepted as such by the University. The course name that appears on your school’s course list (available at Doorways) may contain the word “honors” but lack the designation in the “Honors Type” column. It will not appear as an honors course in the application.

Has UC stopped weighting grades for honors-level high school courses and does it now give extra points only for AP courses? Does the University still grant college credit based on AP exam scores?
UC continues to grant honors weight for high school honors courses. However, the honors policy (see Doorways) limits the number of honors courses that can be approved in each subject area at each school. Some schools were over the limit and have had the honors designation removed from some of their courses.
UC also continues to grant college units for AP examinations with appropriate scores. You can find information about AP credit here.

Does UC grant extra grade points for a grade lower than C in an honors course?
No. Grades of D are not assigned extra honors points. The University assigns extra grade points for up to eight semesters of University-certified honors-level, AP and/or IB courses taken in grades 10, 11 and 12 in which the student earned a grade of C or better.
