If a student lives in another state but plans to establish residency in California, can he apply as to UC as a California resident?

No. To be considered a California resident for purposes of fees, an out-of-state student must have lived in California for more than one year preceding the residence determination date, relinquish residence in other states, show an intent to establish residency in California and meet other requirements.

This and other information on establishing residency can be found online.

A student who is a college freshman in a different state wants to live in California next year and attend a UC campus. Could he apply as a sophomore transfer student?

Most UC campuses only accept junior-level transfer students, but he could contact the admissions office at the campus he wants to attend for further advice about his options. To be eligible for transfer as a sophomore, a student would have had to be UC eligible out of high school, as though he were applying as a freshman.

How many days into a quarter can a student transfer to a new high school and still have UC count his or her coursework?

It is up to the high school to determine whether the student has attended the school long enough to earn units for coursework. The University depends upon the high school's assessment of coursework completed.

The requirements for a prospective transfer student's major recently changed. The student was following the older articulation posted on ASSIST. Will his old coursework be considered by UC?

Most UC campuses will try to honor the articulation that was in place when the student took the course. However, if a major requirement changes, the University may require the student to meet the more current requirement. Students should check the articulation in ASSIST frequently, and if the requirements do change, they should talk to a deparmtental adviser at UC.

If a community college student completes a 4-unit course and earns a D and then repeats the course, this time offered at 3 units, and gets a C or higher, does UC award 3 units of C and one unit of D?

In determining eligibility, UC would use only the course in which the student got a C. During the selection process, however, campuses may apply locally determined rules and might include one unit of D in the calculation of the student's GPA.

Which high school online courses are approved by UC?

UC accepts online courses offered through the UCCP Online and PASS/Cyber High programs.

The University will honor online courses offered by other providers if the high school principal certifies that a course is comparable to other college-preparatory courses offered at the school site by listing the course on the student's transcript and including the institution/provider through which the course was taken, the number or units earned and the grade(s) received.

Online courses in laboratory science and visual and performing arts do not satisfy the UC requirements. (The exception is 3- or 4-unit transferable arts courses from California community colleges. These courses have already been approved for UC credit.)

Does UC accept online community college courses for freshman admission?

Since online courses at California community colleges are equivalent in content to traditional courses, they are transferable, as indicated in ASSIST. (Please note, however, that UC does not accept online science courses to satisfy "a-g" requirements for freshman admission.) UC does not articulate courses on the basis of delivery method but rather the content of the course; courses are reviewed for content, rigor and scope of subject matter.

A student was accepted as a freshman at UC Irvine, Riverside, Davis and Santa Cruz. She enrolled at UCSC but had to drop out after one semester for medical reasons. She has since attended community college part time. Is it possible for her to reapply to any of these UC campuses as a freshman? Does she need to retake the SAT? Is the application process different because of her prior acceptances?

Because the student has enrolled at a community college, she cannot be considered a freshman applicant. She can, however, apply for readmission to UC Santa Cruz. (On the UCSC website, the link to the application is on the left side of the page; complete instructions, in addition to the phone numbers of the college offices, are included in the application packet.)

If the student wishes to apply to another UC campus, she will have to do so as a transfer student. You don't mention how many units she has completed, but some campuses have restrictions on freshman or sophomore transfer admissions.

One of our high school students had to be home-schooled for a semester due to illness. Her first-semester biology grade was a Pass (earned while home-schooled). In her second semester she earned a B. She has two other lab sciences — field biology and AP environmental science. How will the Pass affect her application to UC?

As long as field biology and AP environmental science are on your school's UC-certified course list, the student has fulfilled the laboratory science requirement. On the application, she should enter both semesters of her biology course and the grades earned. She can discuss the homeschooling situation in her personal statement if she wishes to explain why she didn't earn a grade for the first semester of biology.

Last year, at the UC Counselor Conference, one of the presenters mentioned that the UC campuses seek qualified candidates to review applications during the admissions period. How should I apply to be a reviewer?

Application review is handled by each campus. To apply, contact the admissions office at the UC campus closest to you.

Are the Counselor Conferences open to out-of-state counselors?

Out-of-state counselors are welcome at UC Counselor Conferences. The conferences take place in September; registration opens in mid- to late May and fills quickly. Check this site’s conference pages early in the spring for registration information; in the meantime, you can download the materials from this year's conferences.

How many community service hours does UC require?

UC does not have a community service requirement. However, experiences that demonstrate unusual promise for leadership, such as significant community service, may be considered by the campuses in the comprehensive review of a student's application.

I have a high school senior who would like to apply to the UC system to pursue a teaching degree and school counseling degree (pupil personnel services credential). What major should the student declare?

Your best bet would be to refer the student to the education programs on the campuses. Contact information for catalogs and other campus departments is available on the Catalogs and Contact Information page.

I am working with a student who is going abroad for a year before enrolling
in college. Should he apply for next fall and defer admission if he's
accepted, or should he wait and apply for the fall after he returns?

UC does not allow deferred admission. The student should wait and apply for the fall after he returns.

A student wants to graduate in December and attend community college in the spring before enrolling in UC in the fall. Will this student still be considered a freshman? What if he graduates in June and then takes college courses in the summer?

If a student graduates from high school and enrolls in a regular session (not summer) at a community college, the student will be considered a transfer applicant. Since not all UC campuses accept lower-division transfer applicants, the student's campus choices would be limited. On the other hand, a student who is still enrolled in high school can take as many college courses as desired and will still be considered a freshman applicant., as will a student who graduates in June and attends a community college summer session.

top

If a student takes courses at a community college while still in high school does the student earn both high school and college credit?

Students can earn both high school and college credit for community college courses taken in high school. In order to use a course to satisfy "a-g" subject requirements, the community college course must fall within the "a-g" subject areas. To receive college credit, the course must be transferable to UC and an official transcript would have to be sent upon admission to a UC campus.
