Repeating Courses

  1. When a student successfully repeats a course that he or she failed the first time, how should the school and the student report the two courses?
  2. If a student who was admitted to UC receives a D or and F in an "a-g" class in the second semester of senior year, can he or she make up the class the summer after graduation?
  3. Could a high school student take trig analysis (an advanced math class) during the summer at a community college, then take it again at our high school?
  4. What are the rules on repeating courses?
  5. If a high school student took Spanish 2 and then took Honors Spanish 2 at another school, how would you issue credit?
  6. A student received two Ds in AP Chemistry. She then took regular chemistry and got an A. Will this grade replace the D?

When a student successfully repeats a course that he or she failed the first time, how should the school and the student report the two courses?

The student must self-report the grades for both courses on the application, and the University will determine which course and grade will be used in the GPA calculation. Schools should follow their own or their diistrict's policy in recording grades.

If a student who was admitted to UC receives a D or and F in an "a-g" class in the second semester of senior year, can he or she make up the class the summer after graduation?

No, and an admitted student whose academic achievement has dropped in senior year should immediately contact the admissions office of the campus to which he or she was admitted and let them know. The admissions office at the campus can then best advise the student about his or her options.

Could a high school student take trig analysis (an advanced math class) during the summer at a community college, then take it again at our high school?

If the student earns a grade of C or better in the summer college course, that grade will be used by UC in the student's evaluation; a second grade would be ignored. In addition, the student would receive credit for taking the course only once.

What are the rules on repeating courses?

For freshman applicants, a grade of C or better is required to fulfill a subject requirement. D and F grades are not acceptable and must be cleared by repeating a class, completing advanced work in the same subject area of sequential knowledge (math or language other than English) or attaining certain minimum scores on SAT, AP or IB examinations (see Options for Satisfying UC's "A-G" Subject Requirements for Freshman Applicants).

There is no limit to the number of repeated courses applicants may present, but each course can be repeated only once. The University of California does not accept Pass/Fail grades for freshman admission.

If a student repeats a course used to satisfy the "a-g" requirements in which he or she originally earned a grade of C or higher, the repeated grade will not be used in calculating the GPA.

For transfer applicants, a course may be repeated if the student received a grade of D or F. UC does not limit the number of times a transfer student may repeat a course in which he or she earned a D or F. A student may not retake a course at a community college to raise a grade received at a UC campus. UC courses in which a D or F was received may be repeated only at a UC campus.

If a high school student took Spanish 2 and then took Honors Spanish 2 at another school, how would you issue credit?

Assuming the student passed the original Spanish 2 with a grade of C or better, the honors course would be considered an unnecessary repeat and would not be counted.

A high school student received two Ds in AP Chemistry. She then took regular chemistry and got an A. Will this grade replace the D?

Because she didn't repeat the same course, the Ds she got in AP Chemistry will be calculated in her GPA, along with the grade she received in the regular course.
