President Dynes Half Moon Bay tour

7.2005

President Dynes first stop was the Nurserymens Exchange, where he met with local growers, UC cooperative extension staff, and elected officials to discuss UC's impact on the rest of California's agriculture industry.

Later, during a visit to Elkus Ranch, a 600-acre ranch donated to UC for educating youth about the environment, Dynes met with young adults who take part in the ranch's horticulture therapy programs. The program teaches gardening practices like transplanting and seed collection, with the hope that some students will be able to secure local employment as a result of their training. Elkus Ranch annually hosts more than 9,000 youth and adults who participate in a variety of educational programs -- including the UC-led 4-H program.

About Elkus Ranch

The Richard J. Elkus Ranch is an environmental education center providing unique hands-on learning experiences for Greater San Francisco Bay Area youth.

Located on the central California coast, in Half Moon Bay, the ranch offers diverse programs including those specifically designed for students with special needs, allowing participants to learn about the inter-relationship of the environment and themselves in a rural setting.
