Faculty and Staff > University Professorships

The title University Professor is reserved for scholars of international distinction who are recognized and respected as teachers of exceptional ability. Appointments to the title are made from among distinguished tenured faculty of the University of California who hold the rank of professor or equivalent, or from among persons outside the University who meet the qualifications of the professor rank. The University Professorship recognizes the special talents of outstanding scholars and teachers throughout the UC system.

Since 1960, this honor has been bestowed upon 35 UC faculty.

Appointments and reappointments of University Professors are made by the UC Regents upon recommendation of the president, after appropriate campus review. Service as a University Professor is for five years, renewable for one additional five-year period. Faculty members who have completed service as University Professor may retain the title as an honorific distinction.
