One of the most enduring symbols of the University of California is the University seal, which incorporates the University's motto, Fiat Lux (Let There Be Light). The seal was designed by Tiffany & Co. of New York and adopted by the University's Board of Regents in 1910. The seal speaks to the history, tradition and distinctiveness of the University of California.
The suggested University of California logotype (below) consists of the words "University of California" set in the typefaces Cronos Display (for the words "University" and "California") and Minion Bold (for the word "of" that connects them). The typeface Cronos Bold may be substituted for Cronos Display.
The fonts suggested for use in the University identity system are Cronos and Minion. As an alternative, in some cases Gill Sans may be substituted for Cronos. Cronos and Minion are available for license from Adobe Systems Incorporated.
