Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act Of 1996 (HIPAA)

HIPAA Research Compliance. Research health information that is associated with a health care service is subject to the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. Other state and federal laws govern privacy and confidentiality of personal health information obtained in research.

Guidelines: This document describes the interface between conducting research at UC and the HIPAA requirements.

FAQs: These FAQs answer commonly asked questions about the Research Authorization Forms.

Educational Modules: PowerPoint slide presentations have been developed as templates to facilitate staff training on the specifics of the HIPAA privacy and security rules as related to research.

State and federal privacy laws protect the use and release of your health information. Under these laws, the University of California or your health care provider cannot release your health information to the research team unless an authorization is obtained. See Research Authorization form.
