The Melanie Woiwode Memorial Scholarship Fund Grants Program is designed to support women involved in spots as an extracurricular activity during their year studying abroad. As a sportswoman herself, Melanie Woiwode understood and championed the importance of participating in a team activity. Not only are sports an excellent way to stay active and healthy, but also an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in a new culture.
2. Eligibility
Female students in both the year-long and one-term programmes who participate in a sport while abroad.
3. Type and Amount of Grant
The Melanie Woiwode Scholarship is designed to support a female EAP student engaged in sports while studying in the UK. A year-long student may be awarded a grant up to £250, a term-long student can up apply for grants of up to £150.
Applicants must participate in a school sport during their time in the UK. In the past, grants have been awarded to applicants participating in women’s soccer, netball, tennis, rugby, or crew. Other sports will also be considered.
Typical costs that the grant can cover are:
- Training/coaching fees
- Insurance
- Team Equipment
- Travel Expenses
- Joining and match fees
- Sports related projects
4. What We Are Looking For
Applicants must a detailed break down of how the funds they are applying for will be spent. These will itemize the costs of engaging in the sporting activity concerned. Awardees will be expected to submit a report detailing the benefit of the grant to their commitment towards playing sports in the UK.
5. Application Deadlines
The grants committee requests that students may submit applications at any time during the academic year but encourages applications as early as possible within the academic year. The fund’s grants committee will make awards monthly

A: Not necessarily. The committee will view each application on its own merits, although they will take into account the total amount that a student would receive if all her or his applications were successful.
Q: If I have a job, does that mean I can’t apply for a grant? A: No.
Q: How many grants does the fund disburse annually? A: the scholarship will provide an annual grant of £250 - £500.
7. Conditions of Acceptance
If your application is successful the Scholarships Committee will send you a cheque if you are a year long student. One-term students will be able to collect their grant in cash from their study center office. All grant recipients will be required to send us a brief report (250-500 words) describing their use of the funds and the effect the project they undertook had on their EAP experience. We may also invite you to participate at a fundraising event organized by the University of California Trust (UK).
