Below is a statement from University of California President Robert C. Dynes regarding California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s letter to the California Congressional delegation supporting continued investment in federal research and development (R&D).

***********************************************************************

“I applaud Governor Schwarzenegger’s efforts to ensure strong funding for federal research and development (R&D). UC has a longstanding and beneficial partnership with the federal government which helps the university carry out its missions of research, education, public service and healthcare.

“Federal R&D funding is critical to California’s and the nation’s economic and homeland security. Much of our nation’s prosperity can be attributed to the scientific innovation and technological advances of our university researchers. Federal R&D funding is key to prospective economic and high-skill job growth in America. Even in difficult budget times, it is essential that the nation maintain a solid investment in scientific research which will yield new discoveries and will train the workforce needed for the future.

“In order to maintain our nation’s competitive edge, it is essential that lawmakers continue to strongly support federal investment in research in such agencies as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Defense (DOD), and Department of Energy (DOE).

“I commend Governor Schwarzenegger for his leadership on this issue and his commitment to ensuring R&D funding for California.”
