UC REACHES SWIFT LONG-TERM CONTRACT AGREEMENT WITH LECTURERS UNION

After just eight weeks of negotiations, University of California officials today (June 29) announced a tentative agreement with the University Council-American Federation of Teachers union on a long-term contract extension for UC’s 2,500 lecturers. The tentative agreement extends the current contract through 2010.

As part of the agreement, UC lecturers will receive salary range adjustments consistent with funding provided under the university’s compact with the governor and continued eligibility to receive incremental merit increases. Lecturers within their first six years of service will receive an additional step increase upon reappointment to a fourth year of service, and a one-time opportunity to have previous courses taught in other departments on the same campus count as additional credit toward the pursuit of a continuing appointment.

“Our lecturers play a very important role in helping the university fulfill its instructional mandate, and we are very pleased to have reached an agreement that we believe is fair, recognizes their contributions and offers them strengthened advancement opportunities,” said Howard Pripas, UC director of labor relations. “We are especially pleased that we were able to reach an agreement so swiftly and peacefully, and we want to thank UC-AFT for its professionalism and partnership in working through issues at the bargaining table.”

The agreement also allows both parties to renegotiate specific issues in October 2006, and again in October 2008. UC lecturers are expected to vote on the contract agreement in July.
