UC OFFERS UNION NEW WAGE PROPOSAL FOR NEW CONTRACT FOR RESEARCH AND TECHNICAL EMPLOYEES; UNION DOES NOT AGREE TO MEET PRIOR TO PLANNED STRIKE
University of California officials announced today (May 20) that they have offered the University Professional and Technical Employees union, representing UC's research support and technical employees, a new wage proposal that is substantially equivalent to the wage package in the recent contract agreement for UC service workers.
University representatives also stated that despite repeated offers to meet with the union next week and continuous invitations to join in state-assisted mediation, the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union has not agreed to return to the bargaining table and instead appears determined to proceed with its unlawful strike on Thursday, May 26.
"The university has been working very hard to reach a fair agreement for our research support and technical employees," said Howard Pripas, UC director of labor relations. "It's very regrettable that the union seems intent on striking rather than working to facilitate an agreement -- strikes don't help resolve differences."
The union's conduct now forces UC to consider filing a complaint with the California Public Employee Relations Board against UPTE for both its unlawful May 26 strike plan and its unlawful participation in the April 14, 2005, strike.
Each UC campus and medical center will take appropriate steps to ensure that the strike will not disrupt normal operations.
