UC OPENS OFFICIAL FALL 2006 APPLICATION PERIOD

The University of California today (Nov. 1) opens the official application period for fall 2006 admission. During the month of November, the university will accept applications from high school seniors and transfer students to all nine UC campuses that offer undergraduate programs, including the new UC Merced campus in the San Joaquin Valley, which welcomed its inaugural class this fall.

"We encourage students to consider UC in their college plans. UC offers a world-class educational experience and a robust financial aid program to keep it affordable," said Susan Wilbur, UC director of undergraduate admissions. "The university expects to offer admission to all UC-eligible freshmen and upper division community college transfer applicants. We encourage students to apply broadly across the UC system to increase their opportunities for admission to the campuses of their choice."

Students can apply at: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply

To be considered eligible for freshman admission to the UC system, a student must:

- Complete 15 "a-g" college-preparatory courses in high school;

- Maintain a 2.8 grade point average (GPA) in the "a-g" courses in the 10th and 11th grades (this requirement will increase to 3.0 for fall 2007 admission);

- Earn sufficient test scores on standardized tests, including the ACT Assessment plus writing or the new SAT Reasoning Test, plus two SAT subject tests. An "eligibility index" defines the combination of the grades and test scores required for UC eligibility.

The eligibility index can be found at:

California students in the top 4 percent of their high schools' graduating classes based on their grades in the "a-g" courses are also UC-eligible. This path to admission is known as "Eligibility in the Local Context" (ELC). For more information regarding this avenue and other pertinent eligibility issues, please visit: www.ucop.edu/sas/elc

For transfer students, the most common way to become eligible for UC admission is to:

- Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of transferable college course work with a GPA of at least 2.4.

- Complete the following course pattern with a grade of "c" or better in each course: two transferable college courses in English composition, one course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning; and four courses from at least two different subject areas, including the arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences and physical and biological sciences.

When individual campuses receive applications from more UC-eligible students than they can admit -- as is often the case -- they use additional selection criteria that go beyond the minimum eligibility requirements. This comprehensive review of applications evaluates students on a wide range of measures of academic and personal achievement.
