WYATT R. HUME APPOINTED PROVOST OF UC SYSTEM

Acting on the recommendation of University of California President Robert C. Dynes, the UC Board of Regents today (June 2) appointed Wyatt R. (Rory) Hume as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, the second highest post in the UC system. The appointment was made during a special meeting of the regents.

In making his recommendation to the board, Dynes was advised by a committee comprised of regents, chancellors and faculty.

“UC is very fortunate to have a person of such great integrity, skill and devotion to the university,” Dynes said. “As acting provost, Rory has proven to be tremendously adept at leading the academic enterprise of the university, working collaboratively and constructively with both the faculty and the administration.”

As provost, Hume, 61, will oversee academic planning, research, health and academic policies for the 10-campus UC system. Other units under his supervision will include the Continuing Education of the Bar, Education Abroad Program, educational outreach, UC Press, UC Extension, the California Policy Research Center, and the Washington, D.C., Center.

Hume, UC’s current executive vice provost and vice president for academic and health affairs, has been acting as interim provost of the UC system since November 2005 when former provost M.R.C. Greenwood resigned.

“I am both deeply honored and excited by the opportunity to work with President Dynes, the regents, and all the dedicated and talented faculty, students and staff at the university,” Hume said. “I look forward to helping shape the academic mission of the University of California for years to come.”

A native of Australia, Hume has been a teacher, research scholar, academic administrator and clinician both in the UC system and in the Australian university system. He has also advised the Australian government on key elements of science policy and funding for that country.

Hume previously served as dean of the School of Dentistry at UCLA; as chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at UCSF; and in faculty positions at the University of Adelaide, University of Sydney, and at UCLA, where he received the School of Dentistry’s Outstanding Teacher Award for four years in succession.

As executive vice chancellor at UCLA from 1998 to 2002, Hume was responsible for the day-to-day management of the campus, including oversight of the UCLA College of Letters and Science and the UCLA Health System. He led UCLA’s strategic planning processes, provided leadership in resource management and allocation, served as a key liaison with the Academic Senate, and oversaw several key academic initiatives, including the genesis of the California NanoSystems Institute and the “UCLA in LA” community engagement project. He has served on committees and task forces focusing on systemwide governance issues throughout his association with UC.

Hume holds a B.S., B.D.S., Ph.D. in pharmacology, and D.D.Sc. from the University of Adelaide in Australia. He is the author of three books, more than 60 research papers, and more than 100 chapters and other publications. His major research contributions relate to the release of biologically active components from materials used in tooth restoration and their diffusion and clearance from the body. The second edition of his textbook on the prevention and treatment of dental disease was published in 2005.

As provost, Hume will receive an annual salary of $362,500, a 23 percent increase over his current base salary of $295,000 along with the following additional compensation related items:

Per policy, a 5 percent monthly contribution to the Senior Management Supplemental Benefit Program ($18,125 per annum).
Per policy, an automobile allowance (which may be in the form of a leased vehicle or a cash allowance) of $8,916 per year.
Eligibility for a Mortgage Origination Program loan in order to purchase a primary residence while provost.
Continued eligibility for a relocation allowance of $73,750, offered and partially paid when he accepted the position of executive vice provost and vice president – academic affairs in September 2005. Two remaining installments totaling $49,166.66 will be paid in equal amounts in September 2006 and 2007. If Hume leaves the university before completing four years of service from his date of rehire, he will be required to repay the relocation allowance at a rate of 25 percent for each year of uncompleted service.
Per policy, an administrative fund allocation of $10,000 annually for official entertainment and other purposes permitted by university policy. Adjustments may occur annually as permitted by policy.
Standard pension and health benefits, and standard senior management benefits including life, travel and executive salary continuation for disability insurance.

Service by Hume on compensated corporate boards will require the prior approval of the chair of the regents and the chair of the regents’ compensation committee, and vacation must be used for such service. Any future changes made to the policy on outside compensated professional activities will apply to Hume.

Hume and his wife, Jenny, have two adult children and two grandchildren.
