| Back FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 56 UC researchers elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Fifty-six University of California researches have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society in this year's annual election. Nine of UC's 10 campuses are represented in this year's election, and the UC-affiliated fellows constitute more than 10 percent of the 449 new association fellows. With this latest election, there are approximately 530 UC researchers who are fellows of the association. Chosen by their peers, association fellows are recognized for their distinguished efforts to advance science and its applications in a wide variety of fields, including agriculture, biological sciences, education, engineering, medical sciences, psychology, and social sciences. Fellows have made significant contributions in areas such as research, teaching, technology or administration. As a symbol of their accomplishments, each new fellow will receive an official certificate and a gold science or blue engineering rosette pin during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in San Francisco set for Feb. 17, 2007. "These distinguished researchers are to be applauded for their outstanding contributions to science and technology," said University of California President Robert C. Dynes. "The broad representation from our campuses, and across a wide variety of disciplines, is impressive. "The University of California's membership in the AAAS underscores the dedication of our faculty to excellence in teaching and research and to pursuing solutions for some of the most significant scientific challenges before us." Founded in 1848, the American Association for the Advancement of Science encompasses over 262 societies and academies of science and serves 10 million people. The association aims to make progress in science throughout the world and seeks to increase public awareness in areas of science and technology. AAAS, the publisher of the journal Science, also strives to foster communication among scientists and enhance international cooperation in scientific innovation.
