The University of California and the Federated University Police Officer Association have agreed to a side letter extending their current collective bargaining agreement through June 30, 2008, officials announced today (Dec. 22). The contract covers UC's more than 200 police officers.

"UC police officers do a tremendous job for the entire university and we want to thank the union's chief negotiator and campus representatives for their professionalism throughout the negotiations," said Peter M. Chester, UC's chief negotiator.

Wages and employee contributions to the UC pension plan were the key issues.

The agreement provides for a 2 percent general salary increase effective Nov. 1, 2006, and a 4 percent general salary increase effective Oct. 1, 2007 (the latter increase is subject to receipt of sufficient state funding). Police officers will also be eligible for their regular merit increases.

Regarding pension plan contributions, the union agreed to the reinstatement of contributions to the UC Retirement Plan, commencing at the same time as non-represented employees.
