The University of California announced today (Jan. 11) that senior vice president for business and finance, Joseph P. Mullinix, will be resigning in March to take a job with the National University of Singapore as the deputy president for administration.

As the executive in charge of business and financial matters for the UC system, Mullinix was responsible for the development of policy and oversight for the university's financial systems; human resources, compensation, and benefit programs; controller; internal audit; business functions; information technology and facilities administration.

UC president Robert C. Dynes thanked Mullinix for his service.

“UC is a highly complex system and Joe has amassed a record of substantial accomplishments over the past five years in helping us to be a more effective, service-oriented organization,” said Dynes. “He will be missed greatly and we wish him well.”

“UC is a remarkable and unique institution, and I’ve appreciated deeply the opportunity to serve the university and the people of California,” said Mullinix.

In August 2005, Mullinix informed Dynes that the foreign university had contacted him in March of that year regarding employment, and that subsequent discussions led him to visit the university. Mullinix stated he was intrigued by the opportunity to work in a different culture and at a smaller university that is committed to excellence. In December 2005, he told Dynes that he had accepted an employment offer.

Mullinix will leave UC following the UC Board of Regents’ March 15-16 meeting. Dynes will appoint a search committee shortly to conduct a nationwide search for a replacement.

Mullinix, 63, joined UC's Office of the President as senior vice president for business and finance in August 2000. He previously served as vice president for finance and administration at Yale University for seven years. Prior to joining Yale in 1993, he was Columbia University's senior vice president and chief administrative officer for nine years. Prior to his positions in higher education, Mullinix served as senior analyst with Goldman, Sachs and Company, and he also served as deputy associate director at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.

He currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the National Association of College and University Business Officers, a member of the Board of Directors for the California Association for Research in Astronomy (CARA), and a Director for the Forum for the Future of Higher Education.
