The University of California Board of Regents is very pleased that Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS), of which the University is a part of, has been selected by the Department of Energy as the new manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. While today’s selection marks the end of the University’s long and distinguished history as sole manager of Lawrence Livermore, we are proud that the University’s scientific leadership role will continue as part of the LLNS team.
On behalf of the Board of Regents, I want to thank each member of the team that worked diligently on preparing the LLNS bid. I also want to thank Regent Gerald Parsky for his tremendous leadership on this effort and ensuring that the best interests of the Laboratory, the University and the American people were maintained through this process. I am pleased that Regent Parsky will continue to represent the University’s interests as chairman of the LLNS Board. I would also like to recognize UC Vice President for Laboratory Management Robert Foley and Associate Vice President for Laboratory Management Robert VanNess for putting together a successful proposal with our team. Their work is to be commended.
I also wish to thank George Miller for his work as Laboratory Director and wish him continued success as Director and as president of the LLNS team. George has tremendous experience and expertise that will make him an excellent director of this great Lab. Finally I wish to thank each employee at Lawrence Livermore, whose tireless dedication has made the Laboratory one of the premier research and development facilities in the world.
This is an exciting time for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as well as the LLNS team. Over the next five months the University looks forward to working closely with the LLNS team to make the transition to the new management as seamless as possible, and ensure Livermore Laboratory’s continued success as a world-class leader in science and technology.
