SACRAMENTO— More than 100 physicians of UC Davis Health System have been identified as being among the United States' best doctors by an organization that bases its selections on surveys of other physicians.
The 2007 list compiled by Best Doctors, Inc. includes 108 UC Davis doctors. The list is based on responses to a survey of physicians that asks them: “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” According to Best Doctors, founded in 1989 by two physicians affiliated with Harvard Medical School, this survey replicates “the informal, peer-to-peer referral process that doctors themselves use to determine the most appropriate physicians for individual cases.
The survey occurs biennially and involves the physicians in the Best Doctors database, which represents the top 3 percent to 5 percent of specialists in the United States where Best Doctors is present. The specialists complete ballots on other doctors in their own and in related specialties. During the nine-to-12-month survey period, the doctors also may nominate and provide information on other physicians who they think should be considered in the peer-review process.
Over the past 15 years, Best Doctors has developed a database of more than 50,000 specialists in more than 30 countries around the world, in 43 specialties and more than 400 subspecialties. In the United States, Best Doctors has identified more than 40,000 of the best physicians.
