University of California Regent John J. Moores announced today (Nov. 12) his resignation from the Board of Regents, effective immediately.

Moores was appointed in March 1999 by then-Gov. Gray Davis to a term on the Board of Regents expiring in March 2009. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will appoint a successor to complete the remainder of Moores’ term.

Moores, of San Diego, is chairman of the San Diego Padres Baseball Club and of JMI Services, Inc. He also serves as chair of the Board of Trustees for The Carter Center.

The UC Board of Regents consists of 26 members. Eighteen are appointed by the governor, subject to confirmation by the state Senate; one is a UC student, appointed by the board to a one-year term; and seven are ex officio members, including the governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the state Assembly, state superintendent of public instruction, president and vice president of the Alumni Associations of the University of California, and president of the university.

Two faculty members -- the chair and vice chair of the Academic Council -- sit on the board as non-voting members, and two staff advisors serve as non-voting advisors to two Regents' committees.
