Pre-holiday video teleconferencing to connect troops in Iraq with families

WHAT: The San Diego Supercomputer Center is hosting a series of live video teleconferences enabling several San Diego-area families to speak with their loved ones stationed in Iraq. The calls are part of an ongoing partnership between SDSC and the Freedom Calls Foundation (www.freedomcalls.org) to keep troops and their families in touch during the holidays and throughout the year.

WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to about 2 p.m. News crews are encouraged to arrive early.

WHO: Interview opportunities with families from MCAS Miramar and Jim R. D’Aoust, Cyber-Infrastructure Partnership (CIP) Project Manager, San Diego Supercomputer Center.

WHERE: First Floor Auditorium, San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego.

(Directions from Interstate 5)

  • Exit Genesee Avenue and turn west. (From the south, turn left. From the north, turn right.
  • At the top of the hill, turn left at North Torrey Pines Road.
  • At the first light, turn left onto Northpoint Drive, entering the UCSD campus.
  • Follow Northpoint Drive past the campus Information Booth.
  • Continue on Northpoint around the athletic fields as it turns right and becomes Hopkins Drive.
  • Turn right on Voigt Drive and enter the Hopkins parking structure at the top of the hill (Level 6) and proceed to Level 7 (rooftop). NOTE: Parking passes are not required on weekends, at which time you may park in any red, green, yellow, or metered space.
  • Cross the footbridge at the west end of Level 7 and exit right from the Social Sciences Building breezeway.
Turn right and proceed down the curved sidewalk to the lobby entrance of the San Diego Supercomputer Center.
