IRVINE — Julian Bond, a civil rights leader and chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, will give the keynote address at UC Irvine’s 24th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium. The four-day event includes a volunteer day, a march and a rally.

Bond’s talk on change in the civil rights movement is set for 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Crystal Cove Auditorium in the UCI Student Center.

Bond has led civil rights and economic justice movements for almost 50 years. He was at the forefront of the student sit-in and anti-segregation efforts in the South while studying at Morehouse College in the early 1960s. He founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He served more than 20 years in the Georgia state assembly and is a distinguished professor at American University and a history professor at the University of Virginia. Bond has chaired the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, since 1998.

The four-day Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium is sponsored by the Cross-Cultural Center, the oldest center of its kind in the UC system. All events are free and open to the public. Tickets required for Bond’s lecture are available at the Cross-Cultural Center. For more information, e-mail sumali@uci.edu or call 949-824-4782.
