Regents meet to consider appointment of new president

The University of California Board of Regents will hold a special meeting by teleconference to consider the appointment of and compensation for a new systemwide president on Thursday, March 27, at the UC San Francisco-Mission Bay campus' community center, 1675 Owens St., and several other locations.

The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. with a closed session of the Regents' compensation and educational policy committees. Open sessions of the compensation committee and full board will follow at approximately 3 p.m.

Reporters can access the Regents' meeting in one of three ways:

Chairman Blum, other Regents, and the candidate will be at Mission Bay. Reporters may also join other Regents participating in the meeting by phone from other locations.

Live audio broadcasts of the meeting's open sessions, scheduled to begin at approximately 3 p.m., will also be available via the Internet. To connect to the audio streaming of the open sessions: http://california.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=2

In addition, a media availability will occur after the Regents' meeting, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Reporters can access this press conference in person at UCSF-Mission Bay or by telephone. Call-in information will be provided later in the week.

Regents will be participating in the meeting from several teleconference locations, where media may attend the open sessions. These teleconference locations are listed on the agenda web page at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/regents/regmeet/mar27.html

The Regents' committee conducting the search recommended last Thursday that Mark G. Yudof, currently head of the University of Texas system, be appointed to lead the UC system. Yudof, one of the leading figures in American higher education, has served as chancellor of the UT system since August 2002. He previously was president of the University of Minnesota and a longtime faculty member, dean and provost at the University of Texas at Austin.

The new chief executive would replace President Robert C. Dynes, who last August announced his intention to step down no later than June 2008 after nearly five years in the position. The search committee was formed following the announcement of President Dynes' decision. In keeping with its bylaws and policies, the UC Board of Regents has undertaken a national search for his replacement. The regents' committee consulted broadly with constituent groups of the University from across all 10 campuses.

The University of California will have no further comment until the Board of Regents acts on the presidential appointment, Regents' Chairman Richard C. Blum said.
