University of California President Mark G. Yudof has named a committee of university regents, faculty, staff, students, alumni and community representatives to advise him in the national search for the next chancellor of UC Davis.

Larry Vanderhoef, who has been chancellor of UC Davis since April 1994, announced in June that he plans to step down on June 30, 2009. Vanderhoef is currently the senior chancellor among UC's 10 campus leaders. The final year of his 15-year tenure as chancellor is coinciding with the celebration of the Centennial Year of the Davis campus.

Vanderhoef, 67, became the fifth chancellor of UC Davis after having served as executive vice chancellor and provost from 1984 to 1994. During his tenure, UC Davis was admitted to the prestigious Association of American Universities, composed of the 62 leading research university campuses in North America.

Named to serve on the advisory committee are:

• UC Regents Russell S. Gould, Bonnie Reiss, Fred Ruiz, Leslie Tang Schilling and D'Artagnan Scorza;

• Faculty representatives Mary Croughan, chair of the Universitywide Academic Senate and UC San Francisco professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences; Robert Powell, chair of the UC Davis Academic Senate and chair and professor of chemical engineering and materials science; Linda Bisson, past chair of the UC Davis Academic Senate and the Maynard A. Amerine Endowed Chair in Viticulture and Enology; Margaret Ferguson, chair and professor of English, UC Davis; and Michael T. Clegg, UC Irvine professor of ecology and evolutionary biology;

• Staff representative Peter Blando, chair of the UC Davis Staff Assembly and business services manager for Communications Resources;

• Academic Federation representative Michael L. Johnson, Ph.D., vice chair of the Academic Federation and associate director of the Center for Watershed Sciences, UC Davis;

• Student representatives Malaika K. Singleton, Graduate Student Association chair (replaced James Hodgson, GSA chair, in January 2009) and Ivan Carrillo, president of the Associated Students of UC Davis;

• Alumni representative Patrick Blacklock, Cal Aggie Alumni Association president and assistant city manager for the city of Elk Grove;

• UC Davis Foundation representative Michael Chapman, M.D., past chair of the foundation and former chair of the orthopaedic surgery department, UC Davis; and

• Ex officio members of the committee -- President Yudof, convener of the committee; and Richard C. Blum, chairman of the UC Board of Regents.

Advisory committee to meet with campus groups, Oct. 23

The committee's first meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23, at UC Davis, where committee members will meet in closed session with invited faculty, staff, students and community representatives to gather ideas and comments about the search and learn the distinct needs of the Davis campus.

The daylong forum will include remarks by President Yudof, followed by a series of separate sessions with the various campus constituency groups. The president and committee members will also participate in a luncheon with alumni, donors and community leaders.

The advisory committee will also be involved in recruiting, screening and conducting interviews with candidates for the position. The committee's work will be scheduled so that candidates can be presented to President Yudof for consideration and a recommended nominee submitted to the Board of Regents tentatively by spring 2009.

In addition to presentations by those constituency representatives who will be meeting with the committee on Oct. 23, public comments are also encouraged throughout the search process. Comments may be submitted via email at davischancellorsearch@ucop.edu, in writing or through the online form at http://chancellorsearch.ucdavis.edu.

The nationwide search will be assisted by Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates (www.storbeckpimentel.com), a firm specializing in providing executive recruitment services to colleges, universities and not-for-profit organizations.

Please note: The advisory committee includes five regents who also serve on the regents' standing committees on long range planning and on grounds and buildings, which would constitute a quorum of these two committees. No regents' committee business will be considered at the Davis meeting.
