University of California President Mark G. Yudof will discuss his commitment to proving the value of public investment in higher education on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Commonwealth Club of California, the nation's oldest and largest public affairs forum.

With public investment in higher education declining across the country, President Yudof believes it is vital that taxpayer-supported universities tell a more compelling story -- not only of their broad public impact and the contributions of their faculty and students, but also of the mounting financial stresses and the need for more, not less, investment to thrive.

To tell that story successfully, however, universities must be able to demonstrate that the public money they rely on is well-managed. President Yudof will discuss how he has placed public accountability for the performance of the 10-campus UC system front and center in the first five months of his administration, and share his ideas for other options to strengthen support for California's public research university.

President Yudof served as chancellor of the University of Texas system and president of the four-campus University of Minnesota prior to his UC appointment. Before that, he was a faculty member and administrator at the University of Texas at Austin for 26 years. A distinguished authority on constitutional law, freedom of expression and education law, he is a member of the American Law Institute and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served a two-year term on the U.S. Department of Education's Advisory Board of the National Institute for Literacy and currently is a member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.
