Seventy-five researchers affiliated with the University of California have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society, in this year's annual election.

Nine UC campuses and all three of its affiliated national laboratories are represented in this year's election of 486 fellows, with 20 from UC Irvine -- more than any other individual institution. With this latest election, approximately 650 UC researchers have been named fellows of the association.

"I congratulate our researchers on this honor," said UC President Mark G. Yudof. "Their work exemplifies the top-notch research UC is doing to improve lives in California and around the world."

Chosen by their peers, AAAS fellows are recognized for their distinguished efforts to advance science and for significant contributions in areas such as research, teaching, technology or administration. New fellows will be recognized on Feb. 14, 2009, at the AAAS annual meeting in Chicago. AAAS, publisher of the journal Science, includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals.
