At this Thursday’s meeting of the University of California Board
of Regents, the board will be discussing and acting on a proposal to
revise UC’s freshman eligibility criteria in order to keep the
size of UC’s eligibility pool aligned with the target in the California
Master Plan for Higher Education. In July, the board acted on several
procedural adjustments, or “rule changes,” to adjust the
size of the eligibility pool. The proposal coming before the Regents
this week would adjust the minimum high school grade point average, as
measured by performance in the “a-g” courses taken in the
sophomore and junior years, needed to achieve UC eligibility.
This advisory is to update you that a new version of the item has been
developed to replace the original version that was posted to the Regents’ web
page. The main change is that the revised item calls for a minimum
GPA of 3.0, effective with the fall 2007 entering UC freshman class.
The previous version indicated that the minimum GPA would be set “not
to exceed” 3.1 and would not be set in exact numerical terms
until 2006, for implementation in 2007. This change is being made to
the recommendation in order to enhance the clarity and simplicity of
UC’s eligibility requirements for students, parents, schools,
and the public.
