GOVERNOR APPOINTS NINE UC-AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS TO STATE SCIENCE ADVISORY BOARD

Gov. Schwarzenegger today (Aug. 4) announced the appointment of 17 scientists to two committees of the state's Science Advisory Board, Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, with more than half the appointees being affiliated with the University of California.

Among the appointees to the Carcinogen Identification Committee were three UC-affiliated researchers:

- David Eastmond, a professor and chair of the Environmental Toxicology Graduate Program at UC Riverside. Previously, he was an assistant research toxicologist at UC Berkeley and a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He is a member of the Society of Toxicology and American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.

- James Felton, a research scientist and director of the Biology and Biotechnology Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has also served as associate director for cancer control at the UC Davis Cancer Center. Previously, Felton was a National Institutes of Health staff fellow at the developmental pharmacology branch of the National Institute of Child Health in Bethesda, MD. He is a member of the Mutation Research editorial board and Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis editorial board.

- Solomon Hamburg, a partner at Tower Hematology Oncology Medical Group and a clinical professor of medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is president and chief executive officer of Tower Cancer Research Foundation, and a member of the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Among the appointees to the Development and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee were six UC affiliates:

- Ellen Gold, a professor in the department of health sciences at UC Davis. Previously, she was a professor and research assistant in the department of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University and a research assistant and associate for the UCLA School of Public Health. She is a member of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

- Calvin Hobel, vice chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Cedar Sinai Medical Center. Previously, he served as consulting staff at San Fernando Valley Presbyterian Hospital and at St. John's Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica. From 1967 to 1983, Hobel was chief of obstetrics at UCLA Medical Center. He is a member of the March of Dimes Scientific Advisory Committee on Prematurity and American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society.

- Kenneth Jones, a professor of pediatrics at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Previously, Jones served as a pediatrician in the U.S. Army. He is a member of the Teratology Society and American Academy of Pediatrics.

- Carl Keen, a professor and chair of the department of nutrition at UC Davis. Keen also serves on the Journal of Medicinal Food and Magnesium Research editorial boards. He is a member of the American Society for Nutrition Sciences and Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.

- Hillary Klonoff-Cohen, a professor in residence in the division of epidemiology at UC San Diego. Her areas of expertise include maternal and child health, reproductive concerns, and environmental exposures. She is a member of the Society of Epidemiologic Research and American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

- Linda Roberts, a senior toxicologist at ChevronTexaco Energy Technology Co. Previously, she was a postdoctoral scientist in the division of reproductive and developmental toxicology at the National Center for Toxicological Research, and as a researcher in developmental and reproductive biology at the Primate Research Center at UC Davis. She is a member of the Teratology Society and Society of Toxicology.

The appointments do not require Senate confirmation and there is no salary attached to them.
