University of California President Robert C. Dynes issued the following statement today (Sept. 7) on UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale’s announcement that he will be retiring as chancellor effective June 30, 2006, and returning to teaching, scholarship, and engagement in international affairs and national security policy issues:
“Al Carnesale has provided superb leadership during a challenging time, when California faced tough budget challenges that threatened the entire University. Throughout this period, UCLA has built upon its foundation of excellence and enhanced its service to the people of Los Angeles and California immeasurably. I am indebted to Chancellor Carnesale for the contributions he has made to UCLA’s academic quality, its engagement with the community, its expansion to meet California’s growing needs, and its educational experience for students. In addition, speaking on behalf of all the chancellors, I can say that Al has been a tremendous resource and a remarkably collegial individual who will be very much missed.
“I am confident that, thanks to Al’s leadership and the incredible talents of the entire UCLA community, the campus will continue to be a national leader in higher education and a powerful contributor to the economy, health, and quality of life in the entire state of California.”
President Dynes will launch, as quickly as possible, a national search for a successor to Chancellor Carnesale. An advisory committee of Regents, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community representatives will be convened to assist with the search.
