I welcome Assemblymember Liu’s interest in evaluating the functions and operations of the University of California Office of the President relative to those of the Regents and the individual campuses. As a system, we need to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible for the people of California, and a periodic review is entirely appropriate.

One review of the structure of the Office of the President, requested by the Regents, is already underway. The Regents will hear a presentation regarding that review at their May meeting. It is my intent that this first review will lead to structural and functional improvements in a timely manner.

The employees at the Office of the President are dedicated and hard-working people who are committed to serving the mission of the University. I greatly value their contributions to the UC system. I also welcome the interest of Assemblymember Liu and other members of the Legislature in developing constructive solutions to the problems identified in the University’s compensation programs. My goal, working with others, is to achieve full public accountability.
