Seventeen University of California researchers have been elected today (April 28) to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. They are part of a class of 72 new members and 18 foreign associates.

"This is a great honor," UC President Mark G. Yudof said. "From researching cancer drugs to showing that the universe is expanding at an accelerated pace, these UC faculty members are shining examples of how UC contributes to the state and society."

The National Academy of Sciences, a Washington, D.C.-based private organization of scientists and engineers, now has 2,150 active members -- of which more than 360 are affiliated with UC -- and 404 foreign associates -- nonvoting members of the academy with citizenship outside the United States.

Of the new National Academy of Sciences members, six are from UC Berkeley, five from UC San Francisco, three from UCLA and one each from UC Riverside, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara.
