Four University of California campuses were awarded $21.2 million in grants for stem cell research from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) today (April 29), with another $1.3 million in grants to a UC-affiliated institute. The grants will begin funding work that translates basic research into clinical therapies for diseases such as Alzheimer's.
In all, six of today's 15 Early Translational grant recipients are affiliated with UC. CIRM's governing Independent Citizens Oversight Committee approved a total of $67.7 million in grants today. To date, UC and its affiliates have received more than $442 million of the $761.6 million in funding that CIRM has awarded.
CIRM Early Translational grants for UC campuses:
UC Davis: $7 million
UC Irvine: $3.6 million
UCLA: $5.5 million
UC San Diego: $5.2 million
