Green schools in the Golden State

Sierra magazine ranks seven University of California campuses -- including three in its top 10 --  in its third annual "Cool Schools" list of environmentally responsible colleges and universities.

UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley and UCLA received consecutive rankings of seven, eight and nine in the list, which is available online at the Sierra Club Web site. They each received scores of 96 out of 100, and grades of A, in the rankings.

UC campuses also included are UC Davis, at 24; UC Irvine, 27; UC San Diego, 33; and UC Santa Barbara, 39. All received grades of B or higher.

Schools were graded in eight categories: efficiency, energy, food, academics, purchasing, transportation, waste management and administration; in addition, they could earn bonus points for green initiatives.
