Business operations head announces departure

Katherine N. Lapp, UC's executive vice president for business operations, will leave the university in early September to assume a similar role at Harvard University.

Lapp joined the University of California in May 2007. Among numerous accomplishments during her tenure, Lapp oversaw restructuring of the Office of the President, including efforts to streamline business operations and establish a culture of transparency and accountability. More recently, she was the chief architect of plans for overcoming the financial challenges brought about by a decrease in state funding.

President Mark G. Yudof, in a statement to faculty and staff, said her departure would be a tremendous loss to the University.

"Even in the midst of fiscal crisis, Katie proved herself to be an effective, dedicated and trustworthy leader, and I personally will miss her wise counsel. That said, I can assure you that the work of making the University of California a model of efficiency and transparency will not cease in her absence."

Lapp will begin in early October as Harvard University's executive vice president. She will oversee the financial, administrative, human resources and capital planning functions of the central administration. In addition, Lapp will serve as an ex officio member of the board of the Harvard Management Co., which manages Harvard's endowment.

In a note to staff, Lapp said the move would bring her closer to friends and family on the East Coast.
"I have been greatly enriched by my association with the Regents, the executive leadership, and most of all the staff," Lapp wrote. "You have inspired me, cheered me, and continually impressed with your dedication and commitment.  Despite the constant change and uncertainty, you never forgot -- and indeed, continually reminded me -- that UC represents a unique public trust that even in hard times remains a model for the world."

Steps for selecting Lapp's replacement were not immediately announced.
