Furloughs/salary reductions
As part of a strategy for dealing with the biggest budget crisis in its history, including an $813 million state budget cut to the University of California, a systemwide employee furlough plan went into effect on Sept. 1. Every member of the UC community — faculty, staff, students and their families, and UC's labor unions — is being called on to share in the sacrifices needed to deal with the state funding cuts.
Every effort was made to institute this plan in a way that is fair and respectful of all UC employees. This plan calls for UC employees to take from 11 to 26 days off without pay. That amounts to pay reductions of 4 percent to 10 percent, with those who earn more taking a greater pay cut.
