WHAT:
Relations between Taiwan and China will be the focus of the keynote address by Lien Chan, the former vice president of Taiwan, at a University of California, Berkeley, conference examining Taiwan's history and its outlook in light of the country's evolving relationship with China.
"Sixty Years of Cross-Strait Relations: From Conflict to Conciliation" is the title of Lien's talk at the conference to be hosted by the Institute of East Asian Studies. A complete agenda can be found at ieas.berkeley.edu/events/2009.09.17w.html.

WHO:
In addition to serving as the vice president of Taiwan from 1996-2000, Lien was chair of the Republic of China's founding and ruling party, the Kuomintang, from 2000-2005. He is now its honorary chair and heads the Lien Chan Foundation for Peace and Development.
In 2005, Lien met with Hu Jintao, leader of the Communist Party of China, marking the highest level exchange between Taiwan and mainland China in more than 50 years.
