To hear ideas and perspectives from an array of individuals, the UC Commission on the Future has scheduled the first of two public forums for Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at UC San Francisco's Mission Bay campus. Public comment is invited from faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, leaders of community and business groups and members of the general public who care about the future of higher education in California.

The commission is co-chaired by UC Board of Regents Chairman Russell S. Gould and President Mark G. Yudof. It was created by Gould this past summer to develop long-range approaches to ensuring excellence, innovation and access across the 10-campus UC system amid acute financial challenges triggered by deep, ongoing cuts in state funding.

The commission's five working groups — which are focusing on the size and shape of UC, education and curriculum, access and affordability, funding and research strategies — are composed of a spectrum of members drawn from faculty, students, alumni, administration, staff, the Regents and experts not affiliated with UC. There will be close consultation with the Academic Senate throughout this process.

Representatives of the working groups will have visited all 10 UC campuses to hear from students, faculty and staff before the Dec. 8 public forum.

Two or three key recommendations by each of the working groups will be presented to the UC Commission on the Future in March 2010, with additional recommendations reported by the summer.

A second public forum is expected to be held in Southern California in January; the specific date and location will be available in January on the commission's Web site.
