Sixty-two researchers affiliated with the University of California have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society.

All 10 UC campuses, all three of its affiliated national laboratories and the Museum of Paleontology are represented in the election this year of 531 fellows. With this latest election announced today (Dec. 18) in the journal Science, over 700 UC researchers have been named fellows of the association.

"All Californians should be proud of these UC researchers," said UC President Mark G. Yudof. "These are the people who keep our state at the cutting edge of scientific advancement. Their work contributes mightily to the economy and society of California, the nation and the world."

Chosen by their peers, AAAS fellows are recognized for their distinguished efforts to advance science and for significant contributions in areas such as research, teaching, technology or administration. New fellows will be recognized on Feb. 20, 2010, at the AAAS annual meeting in San Diego. The AAAS, publisher of the journal Science, includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals.
