A new University of California, Davis-based journal on the past, present and future of California is now accepting submissions.

Boom: A Journal of California will be co-edited by UC Davis history professor Louis Warren and Carolyn de la Peña, an American Studies professor and director of the UC Davis Humanities Institute.

The cross-disciplinary, quarterly publication will explore the history, culture, arts, politics and society of California. Boom’s debut issue is set for next February.

Published by the University of California Press, the magazine-format, highly visual journal will feature scholars, independent writers and community activists engaging the most pressing issues of the day.

Boom invites new questions. How should the state balance its penchant for innovation with an informed grasp of the past? What are the connections and contests between and among the coast and the inland, the cities and the country, the border and the state? How have all these places shaped and been shaped by the world beyond?

Boom will embrace answers in unusual formats, including photos, essays, documents, artwork, first-person accounts and scholarly essays. For submission guidelines, visit http://ucpressjournals.com/assets/BOOM_Guidelines_v4.pdf. Ideas that don’t fit Boom’s categories also are encouraged.
