8 UC campuses make green guide

Eight of UC's 10 campuses are among the universities listed in "The Princeton Review’s Guide to 286 Green Colleges."

The guide is "an effort to recognize the impressive environmental and sustainability programs at universities and colleges across the country," Princeton Review said in a statement.

Princeton Review partnered with U.S. Green Building Council to produce the guide.

Hundreds of universities nationwide were surveyed to ascertain an institution’s commitment to using USBC's LEED green building certification program, environmental literacy programs, formal sustainability committees, use of renewable energy resources, recycling and conservation programs, among other criteria.

In 2009, the Princeton Review published Green Rating scores for 697 schools. Out of those schools, the 286 schools in the current guide received scores in the 80th or higher percentile. The Princeton Review does not rank the schools in the guide hierarchically.

The guide is free and can be downloaded at www.princetonreview.com/greenguide and www.usgbc.org/campus

University of California campuses listed and profiled by Princeton Review are:

  • Berkeley
  • Davis
  • Irvine
  • Los Angeles
  • Riverside
  • San Diego
  • Santa Barbara
  • Santa Cruz
UC recently adopted a systemwide sustainability policy that in many cases augments green efforts that were already under way at campuses.
